What we check on site

Wall holes, removed brackets and the finish you want

A door handle through a wall or damage left by a removed TV bracket needs the impact area and surrounding lining checked. Mention any cables or old fixings. The repair plan can also consider preventing the handle from damaging the same spot again.

Plaster and plasterboard

Plasterboard is a sheet lining with joints and a supporting structure; solid plaster is applied over a backing such as masonry. Repair materials and edge preparation must suit that construction. The same surface appearance does not establish the same repair method.

Patches showing through paint

A patch can show through because of surface texture, uneven absorption, preparation, sheen or aged paint. Drying and suitable priming matter as well as colour. Agree whether a local touch-up is acceptable or a wider repaint should be assessed.

Ceiling and cornice repairs after the cause is understood

A cracked cornice may suit local repair if it remains securely supported and the cause is understood. We distinguish patching from replacement and check access, profile and paint requirements before quoting.

A hole after a light fitting is removed needs the electrical work made safe by the appropriate personnel first. A stain left after a repaired leak needs the leak history, remaining moisture and lining condition assessed before patching and repainting.

Dry and sound before finishing

A wet ceiling should not simply be covered with a new patch or paint. The leak source, moisture and material strength need assessment first. The repair sequence allows for drying and replacement of unsuitable lining where the agreed scope requires it.

Patching, jointing and skim coating

Repairing holes and plasterboard joints

Small holes and surface defects need a patching compound or filler suited to the wall. Plasterboard joints need compatible jointing materials and reinforcement. We check the lining and repair area before selecting the materials.

Base coat jointing compound is used for the underlying joint coats; topping compound is used for the finishing coat. A suitable all-purpose jointing compound can perform more than one role within a compatible system. These materials are selected for the repair rather than used interchangeably.

A local patch or a full-wall skim coat

A local patch and a skim coat over the entire wall are different scopes. A suitable skim-coating compound or surfacer is selected for broader surface finishing. Sanding, dust removal, a compatible sealer undercoat and the selected interior wall paint form separate parts of the finishing work.

We confirm the wall area, preparation, reinforcement and paint finish in the quote. The existing texture and aged paint still matter when deciding between a local touch-up and repainting a wider area.

Active leaks, structural movement and suspect asbestos-containing materials must be resolved or assessed before plaster is disturbed.

Gyprock Repairs & Wall Patching

Gyprock repairs and finishing

Gyprock repairs can address impact holes, damaged corners and areas left by removed fittings where the surrounding lining and support are suitable. We check the damaged edges and backing before agreeing a patch. Tell us what caused the damage and whether the same area has been repaired before.

The quote separates patching, joint preparation and paint finishing. A touch-up may differ from repainting the full wall, so we discuss the finish you want and set out the repair and painting area in your quote. See our wall repair and painting example and patch and paint planning guide; that project shows wall patching and painting; a structural ceiling concern needs its own assessment.

Ceiling Repairs: Patching or Further Investigation?

A small ceiling patch or damaged cornice is different from sagging, recurring cracks or a ceiling marked by an active leak. Tell us whether the shape or staining has changed and whether water is still entering. Keep clear of unstable areas and avoid climbing up or removing lining to inspect them yourself. We arrange an appropriate assessment before deciding whether a local patch is suitable.

Can a stained ceiling simply be patched and painted?

The source and condition need checking first. Roof leak investigation or plumbing assessment may be separate from ceiling repair. Suspect unidentified lining also needs assessment before disturbance. Agree access, repair area, cornice profile and painting in the quote; surface work does not resolve a continuing leak or movement.

Once the leak has been dealt with, we can replace water-damaged plasterboard and patch affected ceilings. We assess the affected lining and surrounding finish before agreeing the repair area. Include nearby damage and any visible mould in your enquiry so plaster repairs, cleaning and repainting can be itemised.

What Affects the Quote?

Patch size, wall or ceiling access, cornice profile, preparation and the agreed paint finish influence the quote.

Local wall patching, skim coating and white interior painting

We repaired holes and surface defects, added mesh reinforcement and skim-coated the entire wall with a suitable compound. We then sanded the surface smooth, removed the dust, applied a suitable sealer undercoat and finished with two coats of white interior wall paint.

Plasterers: Common Questions

Service details

  • Patch holes, impact damage and localised ceiling defects
  • Install plasterboard and finish joints for scoped alterations
  • Repair or replace cornice and prepare surfaces for painting
Can you patch a hole in a Gyprock wall?

We assess the hole, surrounding plasterboard and support behind it before agreeing the patching work. Tell us whether the damage is from a door handle, removed fitting or a larger impact. The repair should address the damaged area rather than simply cover a weak edge.

Will a repaired wall need painting?

A plaster patch needs an agreed final finish. Tell us whether you want patching only or a painted surface, including for a rental or pre-sale repair list. A local touch-up and repainting the whole wall are different scopes; wall patching and paint-finish advice explains the matching considerations.

Can you repair a ceiling patch or damaged cornice?

We inspect the ceiling or cornice and check the condition around the damaged area. Access, the size of the patch and the existing finish affect the work. Describe what has come loose or cracked; you do not need to climb up to inspect it yourself.

What if a crack or water stain keeps returning?

Tell us that it is recurring, rather than requesting a cosmetic patch alone. We assess whether the damage needs further investigation before plaster repairs. A surface repair does not resolve an ongoing leak or an underlying movement problem.

Can you help with small wall repairs before moving out?

We can assess holes, damaged plaster and touch-up requirements as a repair list. For a rental, confirm the approved work and access with the person responsible for the property. We confirm the approved repairs, finish and written quote with you.

How are plaster repairs quoted, and are photos required?

The damaged area, material, ceiling height, access and required finish affect the quote. We assess the work on site and provide a written quote. Existing photos help if available, but you can contact us without them.

How do plaster and plasterboard repairs differ?

Plasterboard repairs need the sheet, damaged edges and backing assessed. Solid plaster repairs need compatible materials for the existing backing. We identify the wall construction before agreeing the preparation and finish.

Why can a patch remain visible after painting?

Texture, absorption, preparation, sheen and aged coatings can make a patch stand out. We identify patch preparation and painting in the quote, then discuss a local touch-up or wider repaint based on the existing finish.

When is a ceiling crack more than cosmetic?

Sagging, movement, active moisture or a crack that keeps returning requires further assessment. Keep clear of unstable areas. We check whether the cause and support must be addressed before a local patch is appropriate.

Should a water-damaged ceiling dry before repair?

The leak must be investigated and the moisture and lining condition assessed before finishing. Drying alone does not restore damaged material. We agree whether repair or replacement is needed and when the surface is suitable for finishing.

Site assessment and enquiry details

Tell us where the wall or ceiling is damaged and what you have noticed. We inspect the area on site, investigate the cause and confirm the plaster repair scope and quote. Safe photos are optional; email them to handyman.maintenance.au@outlook.com if available.

If already available, the following details help us discuss the job. They are not required before contacting Ellis.

  • Photos with an object for scale and the affected dimensions
  • Whether damage is on a wall, ceiling, wet area or external surface
